How Envy and Personal Greed Created a Fraudster

Siraj’s adult journey began in the classrooms of Farook College (Kozhikode) and subsequently Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). These constitute two premier Islamic educational institutions known for instilling ethical thought processes. Siraj graduated with a BA in Sociology from AMU, but our investigation suggests that while these two institutions preached and instilled ethics, especially Islamic principles, in their students, Siraj majored in personal greed. He grew to violate every tenet of Islam in his business and personal life, indulging in criminal wrongdoings and fraudulent activities that cheated ₹ 2000+ Crores from 2000+ innocent families.

The Trigger: Siraj hails from a branch of the Mather family with marital ties to the Rajah (& Kajah) family. However, his father though born in the wealthy Mather family was not very successful in business, relying on a subsistence business granted by the Rajah (& Kajah) family in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu for his upper middle-class lifestyle. After graduation, Siraj was sent by his father to Khanapur, Belgavi (Karnataka) to work as a lowly-paid Assistant Manager in a tile factory then owned by the Rajah (& Kajah) Group.
Sources reveal this was the turning point. Frustrated by his low status and consumed by envy seeing his maternal cousins from the Rajah (& Kajah) Group enjoying the "good life" driving Mercedes and other luxury cars that were rare in India then due to very high import duties, Siraj snapped. With great expectations, he returned to Kochi to join Mather Group under his paternal uncle K M I Mather. However, he found the strict, ethical, and austere ways of the Mather Group smothering. He wanted the good life of his maternal Rajah (& Kajah) cousins – imported luxury cars, money to spend and travel as desired. And he wanted it quick. What Siraj did not recognize is that Rajah (& Kajah) Group had built their business and wealth with integrity, commitment, hard work, and perseverance. All he could see in Rajah (& Kajah) hometown, Chavakkad, during his school and college vacations with the maternal family was a life filled with the luxuries of life.
Soon thereafter, he ventured out on his own resigning from Mather Group, forming partnerships with college mates from Farook and Aligarh Muslim University, his paternal uncle Noordin Mather (Founder of Benhur Trades & Investments), M E Meeran (Founder of Eastern Spices), M C John (Founder of Lazza, Skei and Uncle John Ice Creams) and several Non Resident Keralites (NRKs). It is through these partnerships with the NRKs that he recognized the power of NRKs as a source of funds to pursue his dreams and aspirations for a good life like his maternal cousins.
The Pattern Emerges: Each partnership became a horror story of side deals, unfinished projects, bad construction (resulting in slanting towers), fund diversions and unsettled accounts. In every instance, the partnership collapsed within a few years, forcing the financially strong partners including Noordin Mather, his paternal uncle, to step in, pay up, and close shop to prevent a scandal and legal action.

The Mather Group is the pre-eminent business entity of the extended Mather family, headed by Siraj’s paternal uncle, the formidable Mr. K M I Mather, known affectionately as “Imbayee.”

The Political, Social and Financial Weight: K.M.I. Mather is a pioneer of Kerala real estate sector bringing the concept of plotted land development, gated villa community, and apartments to Kerala in association with Southern Investments, once a leading name in real estate development in South India. More importantly, he is a political titan, former General Secretary of the KPCC. His political lineage is sterling quality; his father (K C M Mather) was freedom fighter, MLA, and KPCC Treasurer. His father-in-law (T O Bava) was also freedom fighter, MLA, and KPCC President. Imbayee grew up alongside later Congress party stalwarts A K Antony (former Chief Minister of Kerala and Union Minister for Defence), Vayalar Ravi (former Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Non-Resident India Affairs), and Oommen Chandy (former Chief Minister of Kerala), who lived in his wealthy father’s Mas Hotel in Kochi during their student days while building the KSU (Kerala Students Union), the student wing of Congress party in Kerala. Though Imbayee never contested an election, he was in the thick and centre of Congress politics in Kerala being part of every key decision in Congress since the 80s. K M I Mather was also a socially influential leader being the President of Kerala Football Association and Vice President of All India Football Federation and Kerala being crazy about football. Three then younger but important leaders of Congress party – Benny Behnan (MP and Ex MLA), K Babu (Ex Minister, Government of Kerala and MLA) and Dominic Presentation, Ex Minister, Government of Kerala and Ex MLA) were like family members of K M I Mather family and used to be involved and engaged with K M I Mather family like family members.
Unlike Siraj, K M I Mather took immense pride in never using political friendships for commercial or financial gain. He used to joke that the biggest loss to his family was from the decision of A K Antony (his close friend) Ministry who acquired 5.50 acres of prime property owned by his company in front of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for a paltry sum in the 80s to hand over to St. Alberts College for developing sports facilities and fields.

Another prominent branch of the extended Mather family Siraj exploited is headed by his paternal uncle, Mr. Noor Mohammed Mather. As the CEO of Mather and Mather, he is a forceful presence in Ernakulam, controlling the Mather Bazaar, the centre point of wholesale trade in Kerala. He is a leader in the Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Merchants Association, and other activities of traders in the Mather Bazaar, Broadway, and Ernakulam.
Tracing its legacy to the 1920s and founder K C Ibrahimkutty Mather, this group dominates the wholesale hardware trade in Kerala (distributors for Godrej, Yale, Sony, etc.). Their motto is "trust and commitment" attributes Siraj used and utilized to establish enhanced credibility in Kerala and amongst Malayalis.

Based in the coastal town of Chavakkad, Thrissur, the Rajah (& Kajah) Group is not merely a business; it is an economic engine. THE INFILTRATION: BLEEDING THE MATHER GROUP DRY
How the Jobless & Broke Nephew Became the CEO of Mather Group
By the late nineties, Siraj did not have any money. His business partnerships had collapsed, and he was living in a rented house with no income. Effectively Siraj was broke.
The Opportunity: At this time, Mather Projects was flourishing under Raffi Mather (backed by Shaffi Mather and mentored by K M I Mather) and had taken a leadership position in the real estate sector in the Greater Kochi area. They pioneered shopping malls (The Esplanade) and waterfront luxury apartments (Whitewaters) in Kochi. However, in 2000, Shaffi Mather stepped out from Mather Group and moved to Mumbai to work professionally with ZEE TV - Essel Group.
Here is when K M I Mather family made a fatal error. K M I Mather invited his then jobless and broke nephew, Siraj, to join Mather Group as a support for Raffi Mather. Insisting on seniority in the generation, K M I Mather installed Siraj as MD & CEO of Mather Projects. It was a godsend opportunity for Siraj and a curse for the company and Mather Group.
The Psychology of Theft: Siraj was driven by deep-seated envy of the Rajah (& Kajah) family’s grand lifestyle. The austerity of the Mather family did not sit well with him. He wanted the high life lived by his maternal cousins he saw in their hometown Chavakkad. Since he had only a small equity stake in Mather given to him gratis (free) by K M I Mather out of his generosity, Siraj recognized that the only way he can get rich and have free money to spend on the lifestyle he desired is by stealing. He had already tasted blood by stealing and diverting funds from the business partnerships he had ventured into after quitting from Mather Group earlier. Thus, he began diverting funds from Mather Group initially in small measures. Simultaneously, he began to divert funds from the timber company of Rajah (& Kajah Group) in which he was CEO. The game was up for Siraj in Mather Group in June 2012.
